Steam will stop working as of Ubuntu 19 10

Valve confirms that as of Ubuntu 19 10 Steam will no longer be officially compatible with this distro Is the end of games on Linux approaching

For a long time, Valve (company responsible for Steam, the most popular digital games store) has been supporting games for Linux, so much so that, in addition to porting all its titles to this operating system , launched its operating system based on Debian, SteamOS, designed and optimized to play. Although Linux has always been a minor operating system, well below Windows and macOS, Valve has always had a special affection for him , although it is possible that, as of now, things change.

Today, 32-bit operating systems do not make much sense, since The 64 bits, in addition to not having a higher resource consumption, offer greater performance and security to the users. macOS has not supported 32-bit applications for quite some time, and Windows, although there are still 32-bit versions, the use of these is virtually nil, especially if we have more than 4 GB of RAM.

It is not known very well why, but Steam in macOS, Windows and Linux still works as a 32-bit application, that is, the client has not been ported to 64 bits.

This, at first, does not affect Windows users at all, since they can run 32-bit applications without problems > in the operating system. MacOS users already have the days counted, and Linux users, at first, should not have any problems, since 32-bit applications work equally on 64-bit distros.

O At least it should be.

Ubuntu 19.10 will not be compatible with 32-bit applications

Last week, Canonical announced that, as of the next update of Ubuntu, that is, 19.10, the most popular distro removed support for the i386 architecture, that is, the 32-bit architecture.

This means that users can only use applications 64-bit in this distribution. Anyway, Canonical has promised that there will be ways to continue running 32-bit applications in this distribution, something that has been decided thinking especially about the developers.

This movement does not Valve liked it at all, who assured that, as soon as Ubuntu 19.10 comes out, Steam for Linux will no longer be officially compatible with this version, nor with any future version.

Valve will not recommend Ubuntu to use Steam and will recommend other distros to play on Linux

In the beginning, Valve does not have in mind to continue supporting Steam for Ubuntu as soon as this new decision comes true. One of Valve's developers, Pierre-Loup Griffais, says that, from Ubuntu 19.10 onwards, Steam will not be officially compatible with this distribution. Valve is already studying different ways to mitigate the impact of this decision, although everything indicates that they will choose to start recommending other different distributions.

Ubuntu 19.10 and future releases will not be officially supported by Steam or recommended to our users. We will evaluate ways to minimize breakage for existing users, but will also switch our focus to a different distribution, currently TBD.

- Pierre-Loup Griffais (@ Plagman2) June 22, 2019

Of course, we must bear in mind that Canonical has promised that there will be ways to continue running 32-bit applications and games from Ubuntu 19.10, although it will be a manual movement and surely quite complex that many will prefer not to go through.

Why not Steam for 64 bits in full 2019?

Surely most of us have thought that it is time for Valve to launch a Steam customer of 64 bits This would allow this application to be used in the new version of the Canonical distro, however, what many overlook is that this would not help.

Many games are compiled for 32 bits , and many of them don't even have support from developers, who have disappeared or directly don't want to waste time updating their games.

Even if Steam's client was in 64 bits, all these games that they have binaries or depend on 32-bit libraries would stop working, and that is why Valve has decided to boycott Ubuntu.

How Canonical support end affects

Until now, Steam could be downloaded by hand from its main website and installed as a classic DEB package. However, as of Ubuntu 19.10 and the end of support for 32-bit applications, this package cannot be installed on the computer, unless we configure the distro to run this type of applications.

Users who use the Ubuntu LTS (18.04) or the current version 19.04, as these are 32-bit distros, can still play without problems. If we enable optional support for 32-bit applications in Ubuntu, we can also continue to use Steam in Ubuntu 19.10, although without Valve's approval.

At this point there are no more possibilities, or Valve is responsible for packaging your application and all games in packages similar to Snap that include dependencies to replace the lack of 32-bit support, or begins recommending other distros that ensure that all games continue to function normally.

Anyway, both Canonical and Valve are going to be damaged , since Ubuntu is the most widely used Linux distro in the world and, although Valve recommends using another one (surely Debian, or his own SteamOS), Ubuntu users will no longer have Steam support, although it can still be used as explained.
